ABOUT THE PROJECT

Integrating the aesthetics of anime and comics into a 3D cartoon rendering in Unreal Engine.

The collaboration

We are honored to have collaborated with the incredible team at Phoenix Labs on the unreleased Project Bismuth. Working closely with their internal team, we supported their efforts to bring a 3D cartoon rendering art style to life. The main challenge was to make this style work efficiently in real-time and ensure it was customizable by players, including options for body type, skin tone, and dye colors for armor and hair.

The result is a huge team effort and collaboration. Many thanks to everyone involved and the team at Phoenix Labs for their trust and guidance.

TASKS 

Our initial focus was on the look development, shaders, and texturing pipeline for the 3D character assets. Following that, we created 3D character assets for player customization, including heads, bodies, and hair, as well as assets for NPCs and weapons. Here’s an overview of the steps we took for this project:

  • Look development

  • Highpoly sculpt
  • Retopology for lowpoly models
  • UVs and baking
